Hilary Thomas is a writer who becomes the target of a relentless game of fear and fate at the hands of the psychopathic Bruno Clavel. Their initial connection goes back to a quiet Massachusetts orchard where she interviewed him for a book, a detail that haunts her as Clavel continues to intrude on her life in New York. From the moment he first slips into her Manhattan apartment, Clavel toys with her sense of safety, breaking in again and again and taunting her, often calling her “Catherine” in a chilling echo of his twisted fixation. At the center of the pursuit stands Detective Tony Clemenza, a steady presence who guides the investigation and becomes a confidant as the mystery grows darker. As Hilary tries to untangle why Clavel has chosen her, the lines between victim and suspect blur, and the danger grows more personal with every encounter.

During one of the intrusions, Clavel sustains a fatal injury and is found dead just a few blocks from Hilary’s building. The morgue scene is a grim reminder that death can be both intimate and public, as Hilary is brought in to positively identify the body. Clavel’s corpse is then shipped to his Massachusetts hometown, where it is quickly buried by his stepfather, Jonathan Rinehart, in a move that raises questions about what’s truly buried and what remains to be exploited. The case takes a new turn as Hilary and Tony’s professional relationship deepens into a quiet romance, adding emotional stakes to the peril they chase together. After they sleep together, Tony leaves to fetch dinner, and Hilary faces a renewed threat when Clavel materializes again in her bath, this time branding her as a vampire and warning that he could stab her through the heart. Tony arrives just as Clavel vanishes, and the sense of a personal vendetta becomes harder to ignore.

Seeking concrete answers, Hilary and Tony go to the funeral home to confirm Clavel’s death, where they learn from the mortician that Clavel was buried quickly and without embalming at the insistence of his stepfather. Investigations reveal a suspicious pattern of finances: Clavel withdrew funds shortly after his supposed death, and a bank teller who knew him remembers seeing him alive. His check register shows small, selective payments to a few people—a local bookseller and an elderly woman among them. The bookseller becomes a key clue in piecing together Clavel’s strange life, and Bookseller becomes a tangible thread in the messy web of the case. Hilary’s agent, Kayla, also falls into the killer’s sights, and Clavel stalks her in her own home, demanding to know Hilary’s whereabouts before stabbing her to death, a brutal escalation that shows how personal this vendetta has become. The body count rises quickly as the investigation unfolds, and Hilary and Tony press on, gathering testimonies from Clavel’s psychologist, who recounts a mind twisted by a belief that he was damned by his occultist mother Catherine, who allegedly continues to inhabit others after death.

The trail leads them to Clavel’s childhood home, where he confronts Jonathan and kills him, deepening the sense that the killer’s violence has a personal, almost ritualistic edge. Their next stop is the bookstore—Clavel’s haunt—where the shop owner claims the killer may be possessed by a darker force and hints at something beyond ordinary madness. The trail then turns to Mrs. Yancey, a former bordello madam who once rented a room to Clavel’s mother Catherine. Mrs. Yancey recounts a disturbing tale: Catherine, after becoming pregnant, spun a story about adopting a friend’s child, but she ultimately birthed twins and kept one hidden away. The two brothers were forced to play one person, never to be seen together, and Catherine carried on an incestuous relationship with the “secondary” son, whom she kept locked in a cellar. For years, Mrs. Yancey and Catherine maintained a steady stream of payments to keep this dark secret hidden, a detail that sheds light on the family’s terrifying history and Clavel’s own fixation on his mother’s memory.

Back at the Clavel mansion, Clavel himself is pictured in a disturbing scene as he caresses and kisses the corpse of his twin, having grave-robbed the body. Armed with the revelation that there are two identical “Bruno Clavels,” Hilary and Tony return to the mansion to uncover the truth. Inside, Hilary spots a portrait of Catherine that eerily resembles her, and she realizes that the Clavel she initially encountered was obsessed with the possibility of resurrecting Catherine in her body. The other Clavel brother, long kept out of sight, views Hilary as a manifestation of his mother and lurches toward violence as a way to avenge the abuse he endured.

As the confrontation heats up, Tony is attacked by the living Clavel upstairs, while Hilary discovers Jonathan’s corpse impaled on a fence in the yard. The chase spills out into the backyard, where Clavel corners Hilary in the cellar. In a brutal finale, Clavel sustains a fatal knife wound from Hilary after she shoves him down the stairs. The dying killer writhes as a swarm of beetles covers his body, a macabre image that seals his supposed death. Believing the threat is over, Hilary and Tony momentarily breathe a sigh of relief, only for Clavel to revive mid-scene and rise from the cellar, prompting Tony to shoot him dead. What began as a calculated stalking spirals into a deadly confrontation that tests Hilary’s resilience and steadfastness, leaving her to process the dual shocks of personal survival and the truth behind the brutal lineage of Clavel’s motives.
