Raghavan Master, V K Sreeraman, a scion of a high Adiga Brahmin lineage and a steadfast communist, finds his ancestral home and reputation slipping away as the tharavadu loses its former fame and fortune. The weight of this decline lands squarely on Balachandran Adiga, Prithviraj Sukumaran, his only son, who must shoulder the responsibility of keeping the family together and safeguarding his four sisters from hunger and humiliation. Balachandran understands that reviving their fortunes will not come easily, and every decision will be measured against the goal of preserving the family’s honor while arranging suitable marriages for his sisters.
The eldest sister, Shobha, keeps the family afloat through modest earnings from tailoring, a livelihood that barely staves off poverty but is enough to prevent the family from starving. Balachandran’s life becomes more complicated when he is arranged to marry Sumithra, his cousin, a match that promises stability in an unstable world. But the threat of eroding moral ground is never far away. Thripran Namboodhiri, Salim Kumar, arrives with a quid pro quo: he offers to secure a politically advantageous match by leveraging his influence to place Balachandran in a Secretariat position, a rank-list opportunity that could save the family from ruin before it fades away. The price, however, is steep, and Sumithra pushes Balachandran to relinquish their shared dreams for the sake of the family’s precarious security.
In a bid to stabilize their finances and social standing, Balachandran makes a drastic choice: he marries Surabhi, Samvrutha Sunil, a woman from a wealthy family. This strategic alliance is meant to blunt the economic blows that have battered the clan for years, but it sours household harmony and complicates his love life. Amid this chaotic rearrangement, the family trajectory is jolted further when Shobha abandons the path Balachandran hoped she would follow, running away with an Adivasi leader, Sreedharan. The rumor mill roars, reputations crack, and the family’s moral standing takes a hit, contributing to the death of their mother and a cascade of consequences that ripple through the household.
Sumithra’s life takes a dark turn as she marries a cruel and corrupt police officer who never doubts his wife’s loyalty, a dynamic that tests Balachandran’s resolve and exposes the uglier side of authority figures who wield power without accountability. Soon after, Balachandran’s life takes a professional turn when he joins the Secretariat. There, he is mentored by a seventy-year-old guide, Unnithan Asan, whose wisdom guides him through the labyrinth of political maneuvering and bureaucratic corruption that define his new world.
Financial pressures push Balachandran down a corrosive path. He becomes a corrupt officer, perpetually on the lookout for money and influence. To protect his already fragile position, he fabricates a persona as a bachelor, exploiting the affections of Vimala, a divorcee and his colleague. With Vimala’s help, Balachandran enters the inner circle of power as he is posted to Pattam Raveendran’s ministerial staff, the niece of the new revenue minister, and quickly ascends the bureaucratic ladder. The ascent comes at a steep moral cost, gradually reshaping his identity and priorities.
As the days slip by, a sequence of events gnaws at Balachandran’s conscience, tugging him away from the promise of wealth and position toward a longing for a simpler, more honest life. The drive to return to his roots intensifies, pushing him to dream of a quiet, peaceful existence back in his homeland with Surabhi and the rest of his family. The narrative threads through family honor, political ambition, personal compromise, and the difficult choices that accompany both status and love, charting a path from corruption’s seduction back toward the life he once imagined in a village of kin and truth.
In the backdrop of these upheavals, the drama also features other key figures who color Balachandran’s world. The Chief Minister, played by Rajmohan Unnithan, adds a political texture to the unfolding saga, while the presence of the family’s elders and allies weaves a complex tapestry of loyalty, betrayal, and the ever-present tension between tradition and modern ambition. The story remains anchored by Balachandran’s fragile arc: a young man who begins with a sense of duty to family and culture, only to be pulled into the corrupt currents of power, and who must ultimately decide whether to cling to a life shaped by crisis or reclaim a future rooted in simplicity, love, and the enduring bonds of kin.
