In 1953, Harlan is a repressed, uptight accountant sharing a cramped apartment block with his beautiful yet neglected wife Lillian. He becomes obsessed with a tiny morning mystery: someone keeps drinking the milk left outside their door. To catch the thief, he rigs a cord tied to a bottle that will alert him when it’s moved, and this quiet routine spirals into a discovery: the culprit is a homeless war veteran, Sam McMurray.

The revelation leads to a brutal moment that alters the building’s atmosphere forever. The vagrant offers a cautious apology, but Harlan erupts in violence, knocking him down and leaving him with what looks like a cracked skull. In a panic, Harlan hides the body behind the folding bed in another vacant apartment opposite his own, a secret that gnaws at him as the days pass.

Harlan’s paranoia deepens, and his behavior grows increasingly irrational. It pushes Lillian away and into the arms of building supervisor Everett McGill. He fixates on the idea of a deranged resident known as the Contessa, whom he believes plans to run away with him, and his erratic antics begin to deter potential tenants from approaching the room where the body lies.

Soon a young couple, Alphonse and Jeanette Florescu, move in. Alphonse Florescu and Jeanette Florescu become entangled in Harlan’s unraveling world as he tries to intervene when Alphonse considers opening the bed. The confrontation culminates in a terrifying moment: Alphonse looks at the bloody but empty bed, and in a last, desperate act, Harlan hurls himself through the apartment window to his death on the street below.

A crowd quickly gathers around his body, while the vagrant, head bandaged, is left to contemplate the aftermath in a world that has clearly moved on without him.
