Harrison Tyler, Dean Winters, is a struggling freelance author of up-and-coming pulp novels, suddenly pulled into an unlikely day-to-day when Melissa Morrison, Lorraine Ansell, asks him to babysit her six-year-old daughter Jenny Morrison, [Emily Mae Young](/actor/emily-mae-young, while she’s out of town for several weeks.

What starts as an uneasy arrangement slowly blooms into something warmer for Harrison. He grows fond of Jenny’s bright, precocious nature, and the two form a gentle bond that reveals a tenderness he hadn’t expected. Jenny, in turn, decides to play matchmaker for Harrison and Holly, Yasmine Bleeth, a striking woman who often passes through the coffee shop where Harrison spends time with Jenny.

To entertain her, Harrison spins stories about Mr. Dodo, Jenny’s beloved stuffed animal. Jenny secretly records these bedtime tales and has Holly transcribe them, sending the material to Harrison’s publisher. The newly minted Mr. Dodo stories become a publishing sensation, giving Harrison a shot at financial stability he’s never had. Yet even as his career begins to take off, a courtroom reality lurks in the background.

A shocking discovery emerges when Harrison views Jenny’s birth certificate: he is Jenny’s father. Melissa returns earlier than expected and takes Jenny back, leaving Harrison to wrestle with the possibility of custody and the dream of a proper family. The publisher, recognizing a golden opportunity, contracts him to continue the Mr. Dodo series, which only strengthens his position. But the custody battle is decided in Melissa’s favor by The Judge, James Earl Jones.

The aftermath of the hearing is tense: Melissa and Jenny clash, Jenny is slapped and cries, and Melissa realizes too late that she may have misjudged the situation. She eventually relents and returns Jenny to Harrison, acknowledging the precarious but hopeful bond they share.

The story closes with a warm, shared moment at a bookstore signing: Jenny, Holly, and Harrison greet a crowd of delighted kids, finding a new sense of belonging. As the credits roll, Mr. Dodo waves to the audience, leaving a lingering sense of whimsy and possibility.
