In Belgrade, then part of Serbia, the Petrovitch family stands at the heart of a dangerous struggle against the occupying forces. Milosh John Clements Petrovitch, a Yugoslav military captain, starts a bold campaign from the rugged Serbian mountains, forming an underground anti-Nazi guerrilla movement that seeks to disrupt the German grip on the region. His brother, Dr. Stephan Petrovitch Stephen Murray, adopts a perilous double identity: he appears as a Nazi collaborator and works directly under General von Staengel Godfrey Tearle, the commander of the occupation force, all in an effort to pass along crucial intelligence to the resistance.
With Stephan’s information, Milosh and his guerrillas execute a daring ambush on a German train, freeing Yugoslav POWs and wounding General von Staengel in the process. The physician-loyalty tension intensifies as Stephan tends to the General’s wounds in secret, using his medical skill to earn the General’s trust and keep his own loyalties hidden. Back home, Anna Petrovitch, Milosh’s wife and a devoted schoolteacher Mary Morris, is captured and subjected to interrogation. She endures hardship but refuses to break, aided by the courage of her students, and eventually escapes to reunite with Milosh in the mountains.
In a brutal act of retaliation, Colonel von Brock Robert Harris orders the execution of six schoolchildren, a blow that hardens the resistance and spurs the guerrillas to renewed resolve. The cunning operatives, led by Stephan’s precarious position as a supposed Nazi sympathizer, set in motion a plan to sabotage the German war machine from within. He engineers the planting of explosives on another German train, timing the blast to strike a mountain tunnel and inflict maximum disruption.
The film builds toward a blistering, high-stakes battle in the craggy passes between German troops and the Serbian guerrillas. The clash is fierce and costly, underscoring the toll of occupation and the resilience of those who refuse to surrender. After the smoke clears, the Serbian fighters retreat into the mountains, continuing their campaign of resistance and terror against the Axis, holding fast to their homeland and the hope of liberation.
