Unconditional Love 2002

Grace Beasley is a content, but timid, housewife in Chicago navigating a life that feels more routine than bold. One morning, she wins tickets to a concert for her favorite singer, Victor Fox, just as her husband, Max Beasley, tells her he wants a divorce, craving more variety and excitement and admitting a dislike of her frequent singing. Soon afterward, Grace discovers that her son, Andrew, is also divorcing his wife, Maudey.

At the Victor Fox concert, Grace learns the event has been cancelled and is stunned to later discover that the singer has been murdered. She decides to travel to England to attend the funeral, and notices a newspaper dedication to Victor Fox defining unconditional love, signed “D.S.” While sending flowers to the service, Grace discovers another arrangement has already used the same phrase—Victor’s valet, Dirk Simpson. She persuades the florist to share the address and travels to Victor Fox’s home, where Dirk is grieving.

Grace is briefly brushed off by Victor Fox’s relatives, who mistake her for a recording executive because she’s American. They reveal that Dirk claims he and Victor were lovers, which they deny, and they push for her to help them gain access to Victor’s home so they can claim the property and estate. When Grace insists she’s just a devoted fan, they turn her away.

Grace’s warmth and motherly nature gradually win over Dirk, who opens up about Victor’s life—how he was rejected by his family for being gay and how he once enjoyed dressing up in a tiara and a pink feather boa as a child. Dirk also confides that he intends to seek revenge by returning to Chicago to track down and confront the serial killer who murdered Victor. Before leaving, Dirk and Grace manage to slip into the funeral home and dress Victor’s body in a tiara and pink feather boa, shocking the funeral attendees and unsettling his relatives.

In the United States, Maudey joins Grace and Dirk in the pursuit of the Crossbow Killer, a deranged assailant who has killed several people, including Victor Fox, in Chicago. The trio’s efforts are derailed by a misunderstanding, and they are briefly arrested. At the police station, Maudey and Andrew find a way to reconnect, and Max hints at a possible reconciliation with Grace.

Grace makes a tentative choice to return to Max, which disappoints Dirk, who longs for new adventures. Yet Grace soon realizes that the life she returns to isn’t what she truly wants. She and Maudey reunite with Dirk, who is dressed as Victor and blasting the late singer’s music in the parking garage where he was murdered. The three confront the Crossbow Killer, revealed to be a deranged window washer who hates singing because it reminds him of his abusive mother, and they sing to distract him. Grace is terrified but finds the courage to outsmart the killer. Together, they overpower him and direct the police to his location.

Weeks later, Grace and Dirk appear on a talk show, celebrated for their bravery. Dirk reveals that Victor Fox’s family has decided to turn the home into a sanctuary for homeless gay youth, and Victor’s relatives, facing bad publicity, are compelled to comply. On cue, Barry Manilow takes the stage and sings a duet with Grace, signaling a new chapter for the house that once held tragedy and a renewed sense of community.
