Philip, [Totò], a cloth retailer, has grown weary of living under the control of his possessive wife, [Ave Ninchi], who pushes for a more luxurious lifestyle. Since the wedding, his personal freedom has dwindled, and the only pocket of liberty left is his attic sanctuary, where he pores over police novels and tends an altar dedicated to the infamous serial killer Landru.

Trouble brews when their younger daughter Mirella [Giovanna Pala] becomes engaged to a young doctor [Peppino De Filippo]. To prove her skill in giving injections, Mirella, with her mother, decides to use Philip as a guinea pig.

Philip, longing for a taste of a higher life, briefly pursues a relationship with a young lover, only to realize the affair is short-lived and ends it to avoid ridicule.

Back at home, tensions rise as his wife complains about the meager wages and the poor quality of meals she has prepared for years, even admitting that she had to pawn her jewelry to keep the family afloat.

Yet Mirella’s engagement offers a fresh financial lifeline and a renewed sense of strength for the family, nudging the couple toward reconciliation. The story lands on a light, humorous note: while managing the women in their lives can be tricky, they remain indispensable to the family’s balance.
