The Roses of the Desert 2006

During World War II, a small group of Italian soldiers is dispatched to Egypt to assist the local population. They anticipate receiving directives from the Duce Benito Mussolini, yet communications with Italy vanish, leaving the brigade to navigate a foreign land and a shifting sense of purpose on their own terms.

The unit gathers a colorful mix of personalities, including the Captain Giorgio Pasotti who loves poetry, a figure who gradually becomes a steady compass as the soldiers acclimate to desert life. They begin to learn from the locals and grow curious about the surrounding culture, letting the heat and beauty of the land soften rigid military habits while the specter of war still lingers nearby. Along the way, they meet a local woman, Aisha Moran Atias, whose presence deepens their connection to the place and its people, subtly shifting their perspective toward peace and coexistence.

A pivotal moment arrives with an encounter with an outspoken missionary, Michele Placido, who travels the desert with a troop of Germans. His arrival jolts the fragile calm, reigniting tensions and reminding the soldiers of the conflict that still encroaches on their fragile respite. When hostilities resume, the men take up arms again, yet their recent experiences have already altered how they view war: some begin to see it as senseless, while others wonder whether a life in harmony with a land so rich in art and culture might be possible.

His leadership is tested by a devastating personal truth: after the death of his wife, he learns that she was not faithful. This revelation drives him to a final act, as he commits suicide by jumping against the weapons of some Bedouin.
