Top of the World 1955

Major Lee Gannon, Dale Robertson, who is soon promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, is reassigned from a California air base to a weather station in Alaska, against his wishes. He brightens when he learns that his ex-wife Virgie, Evelyn Keyes, now owns a nightclub in Fairbanks.

Gannon reports for duty to Major Brad Cantrell, Frank Lovejoy, who explains to the skeptical pilot how vital the weather information is, especially in a remote region near the North Pole that could be vulnerable to a Soviet air attack. Cantrell makes the stakes clear, and his sober briefing sets the tone for a mission where precision and timing could mean the difference between safety and disaster. Gannon’s initial reluctance gives way to a grudging resolve as he recognizes the importance of their work.

Lieutenant Mary Ross, Nancy Gates, who handles public relations for the station, is in love with Cantrell, but he has become attracted to Virgie and plans to marry her. The love triangle adds a layer of personal tension to an environment that already tests the men’s endurance and focus.

Virgie reveals a dark secret about her marriage with Gannon, then accuses Cantrell of sending her former husband on a dangerous mission just to get him out of the way.
