In a remote Alaskan frontier, a small-plane tale unfolds as Mike Wien, a seasoned bush pilot, flies his friend Dave Karluck over a reindeer herd Dave owns. From the open door of the aircraft, Dave shoots a wolf that has been harassing the herd, setting a grim tone for a voyage that blends danger, duty, and a hint of romance.

Returning to Kotzebue, Mike expects his next customer to be John Wetherby, a rugged hunter who plans to chase polar bears. In an impulsive moment, he opens a door without knocking and walks in on Martha Raymond, who is preparing to head to Little Diomede Island to begin work as a schoolteacher and nurse in the local Eskimo village. Martha has paid for the ticket, and Mike’s government contract ties him to the assignment, even though he knows the route crosses near the tense frontier between the United States and the Soviet Union. The peril is not just from border guards: two miles away is the Soviet-owned Big Diomede Island, across the frozen Bering Strait and the International Date Line. Against his better judgment, Mike undertakes the journey, then edges onto a dog-sled to finish the trip, and a slow-burning romance begins to kindle between him and Martha.

Upon Martha’s arrival, she is welcomed by the local Catholic priest Father François and the reserved local resident Miksook. They explain that the schoolteacher she is replacing wandered too close to Big Diomede and was shot and killed, underscoring the constant proximity of danger in this icy world.

Meanwhile, Mike encounters Wetherby again, first during a flight from Nome to Kotzebue. Bad weather delays the polar bear hunt, and Wetherby shows a curious interest in visiting Little Diomede. He also ponders whether Saranna, a Kotzebue Eskimo girl, could be his fiancée, a notion Mike dismisses with a practical bluntness—he would not mind marrying an Eskimo, but he does not love Saranna.

As days pass, Saranna reveals that Dave has been mauled in a bear attack, a grim reminder of the raw dangers surrounding them. Mike and Wetherby locate a polar bear; Wetherby shoots and skins the animal, aiming to trophy it for his collection. In the scramble to leave, Wetherby’s wallet slips from view and Mike discovers a Soviet identity card tucked inside, deepening the mystery surrounding his client. The tension escalates when Mike confronts Wetherby, only to be knocked out moments later.

In the chaotic aftermath, the chase toward Little Diomede becomes a desperate sprint over the ice toward the Soviet base on Big Diomede. Wetherby, in his haste, not only leaves behind his photos of U.S. defense installations but also his identification card, a crucial clue in the unfolding treachery. Reaching Big Diomede without the documents, he is quickly shot and killed by sentries, sealing the danger he posed.

With the immediate threat behind them, Martha and Mike realize that [Wetherby] was a spy, and their efforts have thwarted his plan to deliver sensitive military information to an enemy power. The voyage, the near-misses, and the fragile whispers of romance all converge into a tense, human portrait of people navigating loyalty, love, and the edge of the world. The story lingers with the mood of the Alaskan frontier—vast, dangerous, and intimate—where every flight could alter the balance between peace and peril. What began as a routine expedition becomes a tightly wound thriller about vigilance, trust, and the unexpected bonds that form in the most unlikely of places.
