Phyllis Tredman [Dorothy Malone] is shocked when her husband Lloyd Tredman [Robert Taylor], a decorated Korean War U.S. Air Force pilot, writes to announce he wants a divorce after his discharge. The news jolts her into action, and she resolves to find him, driven by a mix of concern and curiosity about what has driven the man she married to seek a break from their life together.

She tracks him to Madrid, where Lloyd is drinking and gambling heavily. He is haunted by the memories of sending countless aircrews into perilous missions, a burden that weighs on him as he tries to rebuild his life. Amid this turmoil, he is strangely drawn to Paquita Heldon [Gia Scala], the wife of his old friend and fellow pilot Jimmy Heldon [Jack Lord], adding a complicated layer of tension to an already fragile situation.

Into this precarious mix steps a mysterious figure, Bert Smith [Martin Gabel], who observes Lloyd’s fragile state and matters of risk with calculating calm. Smith offers him a dangerous proposition—$25,000 to undertake a bold, illegal job: smuggling currency from Cairo to Madrid and dropping the money from a plane in mid-air. Lloyd, who has already gambled his last $1,000 on a horse race in hopes of turning his luck around, contemplates the offer with a mix of revulsion and curiosity. The horse race ends in tragedy when the jockey is killed, and Lloyd begins to suspect foul play shaping the strange sequence of events around him.

Jimmy takes up the job after Lloyd declines, and the situation spirals as Jimmy disappears. Paquita blames Lloyd, calling him a coward, a charge that deepens the rift among old friends and unsettles Lloyd further. What starts as a test run grows more dangerous when Jimmy reappears late but alive, and Lloyd physically restrains him to take control of the plane himself, determined to steer things toward a more secure outcome.

The mission careens forward as Lloyd steadies himself after an initial paralyzing fear. A damaged propeller makes the flight perilous, and authorities tighten their grip as Interpol agents begin tracking the vulnerable aircraft. Lloyd discovers that Bert’s operation extends beyond currency, revealing a narcotics-smuggling angle that threatens to pull him deeper into danger than he anticipated.

Despite the escalating danger, Lloyd acts quickly: he drops the box from the sky as planned but then alerts Interpol and oversees Bert’s arrest at the crime scene. The authorities, recognizing his cooperation, choose not to punish him, acknowledging the precarious line he walked between fear, duty, and moral choice. In the end, Phyllis Tredman welcomes him back with open arms, and the couple faces a quieter path forward, tempered by the ordeal they survived together.
