Demobilised after World War II, Mike Alexander George Sanders pursues any deal, legal or not, that promises a fortune. He buys a yacht in Mallorca and hears of a distressed cargo ship, the Chalcis, carrying refugees. He agrees to take the six richest passengers but is sickened by the suffering of the rest and orders the captain to drop them ashore on a remote island. He spots an attractive young woman, Ingrid Dekker Patricia Roc, who refuses his offer of a free ride to safety. Captain Nikarescu Marcel Dalio scuttles the Chalcis in a hidden cove and ferries Ingrid to Tangier.

Shortly after, Ingrid reappears in Mallorca as the companion to eccentric American millionaire Emily Birk Agnes Moorehead. She again refuses Alexander’s advances, even when he hints that his fortune will arrive soon. Mrs. Birk reveals to Ingrid that she is a cop pursuing Alexander, who is an evil crook waiting on a drug cargo. Ingrid agrees to accompany Alexander to the island where the Chalcis lies, and they are dismayed to find all of the refugees dead, locked in the hold by the captain. When Alexander’s drugs arrive, concealed in a schooner, Mrs. Birk, who is actually not a cop but a dealer, takes them and hides them in the wreck of the Chalcis. Alexander’s cover is blown, so he destroys the cargo. To escape the law, he steers his yacht toward Tangier and Ingrid agrees to flee with him. Police launches pursue them and shoot Alexander dead.
