16-year-old Brian Newall lives in Oklahoma and dreams of earning a spot on the high school Eagles, but so far he’s only been the water boy after tryouts. His struggle to make the team is softened by a close relationship with his sister, who records him injuring himself during practice and then streams the clip around their school on the TV. The video soon lands in the hands of Connor, the team’s star player, turning Brian’s lunchroom nerves into a full-blown showcase of embarrassment.
To lift his spirits, Brian’s dad takes him to a Oklahoma City Thunder game against the New Orleans Hornets at Chesapeake Energy Arena. At halftime, Brian gets a chance to shoot a half‑court shot, misses, and accidentally hits a prop mascot, Rumble. The moment is uncomfortable, but a spark is about to change everything. It’s there that Brian meets Kevin Durant and confides that he wants to play at Durant’s level, truly believing it’s possible. Durant signs the special edition Thunder basketball that Brian used for the shot, and the moment becomes the catalyst for an unbelievable transfer of talent.
In the wake of the transfer, the Thunder stumble in the second half as Durant goes cold, finishing the game 0-for-13. The next morning brings a new problem: Connor, who was at the game, posts the clip of Brian’s miss online, amplifying the public ridicule Brian already felt. That night at a carnival, Connor fails to win a prize for Isabelle, the new girl Brian is drawn to, and the humiliation deepens. Connor’s jealousy grows as Isabelle starts paying more attention to Brian, especially as Brian begins to showcase enhanced skill on the court.
With his newfound ability, Brian practices bravely and decides to try out for the Eagles again. The head coach notices his transformation and elevates him to captain, a move that helps the team rack up wins and dramatically changes the dynamics on the court. Connor’s jealousy intensifies as Brian dominates both ends of the floor, and Isabelle’s affection seems more clearly directed at the transformed player. Durant’s presence looms in the background, and Durant’s agent, Alan, becomes involved when he learns that the kid who missed the half‑court shot is the same Brian who’s now lighting up the court.
Before the big game, tensions flare between Brian and Isabelle, prompting a heartfelt apology. While watching the old video of the miss, Brian realizes what he must do to restore Durant’s talent to its rightful owner. He rides his bike to Chesapeake Arena, where Durant waits, and explains his theory about the transfer and the need to reverse it. Brian then hits Rumble with the exact ball he used for the half‑court shot, repeats the conversation he had with Durant at their first meeting, and, with a clear sense of purpose, helps Durant regain his former talent. The Thunder finally clinch a playoff berth.
In the dramatic finale, the Eagles’ state playoff dream hinges on a final game where Brian initially fears he’s lost his edge. Yet, with the support of the team—including a cooperative Connor—the Eagles push through a tense, closely contested matchup. Brian takes the game’s deciding shot himself and sinks it, propelling his team to the state playoffs for the first time in 32 years. The film closes on a note of growth and reconciliation: Brian, once the boy who watched others shine, is now steadily improving and seen sharing the court with Kevin Durant again, hinting at a future where his hard work and teamwork could sustain his talent and success.
