Holidate 2020

Two strangers, Sloane and Jackson, despise the holidays and the pressure to be in a relationship during those times. To avoid unwanted family gatherings and awkward encounters, they make a deal to be each other's "holidate" for a year. This arrangement, initially devoid of romantic intention, sees them attending festive events as a couple. As the year progresses and they navigate increasingly absurd holiday situations, an unexpected connection begins to develop, potentially leading them to find something they didn't anticipate.

Echo Score

The Movie Echo Score

65

Holidate delivers a playful romantic comedy that balances lively performances with a familiar narrative. The film’s standout feature is the chemistry between its leads, which injects energy into seasonal vignettes, while production elements remain functional though unremarkable. Some viewers appreciate the brisk humor and festive variety, but the repetitive structure and reliance on genre tropes dampen sustained engagement. Ultimately, Holidate offers lighthearted enjoyment despite narrative predictability.

The Movie Echo Score Breakdown for Holidate

55
Echo Score

Art & Craft

In terms of art and craft, Holidate demonstrates competent execution without notable distinction. The film employs straightforward framing, cohesive production design, and clean editing that support the narrative flow. Cinematography favors bright, saturated palettes consistent with holiday rom-com conventions, though few sequences stand out as visually striking. Overall, the art and craft serve the story adequately but rarely elevate the viewing experience.

75
Echo Score

Character & Emotion

When it comes to character and emotion, Holidate is buoyed by the engaging chemistry of its leads. Performances are energetic and often grounded in relatable mannerisms, which foster moments of genuine warmth. However, uneven depth in supporting roles and inconsistent sincerity occasionally hinder emotional resonance. Despite these fluctuations, the principal duo’s rapport sustains much of the movie’s charm and invites viewer investment in their dynamic.

60
Echo Score

Story & Flow

In terms of story and flow, Holidate follows a predictable holiday rom-com structure with intermittent creative diversions. The pacing remains brisk, moving through seasonal vignettes, but narrative repetition and cliché plot devices limit originality. Moments of sharper humor and reflective observations emerge sporadically, yet the framework often reverts to familiar formula. Overall, the story provides light entertainment but falls short of delivering a consistently engaging journey.

50
Echo Score

Sensory Experience

When it comes to sensory experience, Holidate delivers serviceable audio and visual design without standout elements. The soundtrack consists of upbeat holiday tunes that complement the tone but rarely surprise. Sound mixing is clear, and visual styling employs vibrant color schemes typical of seasonal fare. Overall, the sensory components align with expectations for a streaming rom-com, offering cohesion but limited memorability.

70
Echo Score

Rewatch Factor

In terms of rewatch value, Holidate offers moderate appeal for subsequent viewings. The humorous holiday set pieces and lead chemistry can provide light enjoyment on repeat, particularly for those seeking background entertainment. However, repetitive plot structure and familiar comedic beats may limit long-term curiosity. Despite these recurring strengths, the film’s reliance on genre tropes suggests limited lasting appeal for broad audiences.

Almost in her thirties, Sloane Benson (Emma Roberts) finds herself dreading the holiday season, primarily due to the relentless judgment she faces from her family for being single. After experiencing a recent breakup, her mother, Elaine (Frances Fisher), relentlessly attempts to set her up with new suitors, much to Sloane’s irritation.

During a Christmas dinner hosted by her family, Sloane’s younger brother, York (Jake Manley), gets engaged to Liz (Cynthy Wu), his girlfriend of just three months, leaving Sloane as the only unmarried individual at the gathering. In another part of town, Jackson (Luke Bracey), an Australian golfer, finds himself spending the holidays with a date he has no real interest in. When his date becomes frustrated over the lack of Christmas gifts, which they had mutually decided to forgo, Jackson leaves her in a state of anger.

After the holiday, fate intervenes when Sloane and Jackson cross paths while returning unwanted gifts. Jackson proposes a unique idea: they should become Holidates, only seeing each other for holiday events to escape the burden of clingy partners. After some initial hesitation, Sloane agrees, and they share New Year’s Eve together, only to part ways again without further communication.

Valentine’s Day brings them together once more, this time with Jackson pretending to be Sloane’s boyfriend when they encounter her ex and his glamorous new partner. Their friendship blossoms as they continue to meet during various holidays. However, complications arise when, after a mishap during a July 4 celebration where Jackson loses a finger, he begins to doubt his worthiness as a partner for Sloane. In an effort to push her towards someone “better,” he sets her up on a date, resulting in a heated argument at her brother’s wedding where their respective dates get involved with each other.

Their relationship hits another bump at a Halloween party when Sloane unwittingly consumes laxatives, leading to Jackson caring for her until they end up spending the night together. The following morning brings chaos as Sloane’s married sister arrives and mistakenly assumes something inappropriate has happened, prompting Sloane to shove Jackson away, much to his chagrin.

Thanksgiving sees tensions rise once again when Jackson shares his feelings with Sloane. Their back-and-forth culminates in Sloane’s comment about Ryan Gosling while shopping, leading to an argument that ends with them breaking off contact.

As Christmas approaches, Sloane visits Jackson but falters when it comes to expressing her feelings. A serendipitous meetup at the mall presents her with one last chance, and amid a crowd, she boldly confesses her love for him. Their emotional reunion finalizes in a heartfelt embrace.

In the end credits, we see that all couples remain together. Not only are Sloane and Jackson off to Australia for the holidays, but Aunt Susan (Kristin Chenoweth) is officially engaged to Faarooq (Manish Dayal), while Wally (Alex Moffat) and Sloane’s mother are dating, alongside Neil (Andrew Bachelor) and Carly’s Mom (Meeghan Holaway). The story wraps with a sense of connection and love, showing that the holidays indeed bring people closer.
