Raymond Yale, David Roberts and Carla Smith, Claire van der Boom, are two married locals living on opposite sides of a quiet river in a small Australian town. Their secret romance blooms against a backdrop of ordinary life, where Raymond works as a foreman overseeing a new leisure-resort project for property developer Gil Hubbard, Bill Hunter, and Carla endures a controlling, petty gangster husband, Greg “Smithy” Smith, Anthony Hayes. They dream of leaving their marriages behind and starting fresh together, but the path to escape is blocked by money, danger, and the unpredictable consequences of their choices.

As the two lovers weigh the leap, Raymond quietly nurtures a plan to secure enough cash to fund a new life with Carla. His work at the construction site provides access to opportunities for under-the-table deals, especially with a volatile colleague named Barney, Kieran Darcy-Smith, who is entangled in the town’s shadow economy. The plan comes into motion when Carla steals a duffel bag stuffed with cash that she finds hidden in her home—a stash that Smithy had hidden away after a botched robbery by his gang. Ray decides that destroying the money would be a cleaner cover for the theft, so the plan involves arson: Billy, Joel Edgerton the town’s skilled arsonist, will set a fire to fake a faulty Christmas-light accident, while Carla seizes the money and Ray orchestrates everything from behind the scenes. The ambition is simple on the surface: fake a disaster, cover the loss as a burned disaster, and disappear with enough capital to begin anew far from the reach of their tangled pasts.

The town’s Christmas celebration provides the perfect cover for the staged blaze. Carla slips away to complete the theft, but a crucial moment interrupts her when she overhears Smithy phoning his mother, Rita Smith, Eliza Logan, and asking her to come to the house to feed his dog. Realizing the stakes have just escalated, Carla alerts Ray, who races to contact Billy. He can only reach Billy’s sister Lily, Hanna Mangan-Lawrence, as his phone dies. Lily attempts to intervene, but she cannot warn Billy in time. But the confrontation explodes when Smithy comes home, gun drawn, and a violent confrontation erupts. In the heated exchange, Smithy is killed in the ensuing firefight as Billy fights to retain control of the money. As Ray attempts to wrest the gun from Billy, a sudden, fatal shot strikes Carla in the head. Billy departs into the night, leaving Ray to mourn the devastating collapse of their plan.

In the aftermath, the town reels from the cascade of violence, deceit, and betrayal.
