What's After the Movie

David Roberts

David Roberts was a pivotal Scottish painter and illustrator whose prodigious output in the early‑nineteenth century helped shape Western visual perceptions of the Middle East and North Africa. Born in Glasgow on 5 September 1796, he displayed artistic talent from a young age and was apprenticed to a local engraver before studying at the Royal Academy Schools in London, where his draughtsmanship earned him early recognition. After a successful debut at the Royal Academy in 1813, Roberts embarked on a series of extensive travels, most famously to Egypt, Syria, and Palestine between 1838 and 1840, where he produced a monumental body of watercolours and sketches that captured the grandeur of ancient monuments and bustling contemporary life. These works formed the basis for his celebrated lithographic series "Egypt and Nubia", published in the 1840s, which not only secured his reputation as a master of the orientalist genre but also influenced architects, historians, and fellow artists throughout Europe. Throughout his career he combined the precision of an illustrator with the dramatic composition of a Romantic painter, evident in his large‑scale oil canvases such as The Great Sphinx of Giza and The Palace of Karnak. He was elected a Royal Academician in 1861, cementing his status among the elite of British art. Roberts continued to work tirelessly until his death in London on 12 December 1864, leaving a legacy of over 1,500 works that continue to be exhibited worldwide. His marriage to Margaret McCulloch in 1827 provided personal stability, though details of any offspring remain undocumented, and his influence endures in the continued popularity of his vivid, meticulously rendered visions of distant lands.
