Professor Rafał Wilczur Jerzy Bińczycki was a celebrated surgeon in early 20th-century Poland, living with a demanding career and a family life that was strained when his wife left him with their young daughter. When a man named Samuel asks for financial help, the two men end up in a bar, where slips of memory and bad luck collide: Wilczur is robbed, beaten, and loses his memory to a severe case of amnesia. He wanders far from home and begins life anew in a quiet village, working as a farm laborer under the name Kosiba, gradually blending into the rhythms of rural life while his true identity remains a mystery to him.
Over the years, the former surgeon’s steady hands and keen mind begin to surface in unexpected ways. He earns the villagers’ trust not just through hard work but also through quiet acts of healing, including tending to an injured young woman, Maria Jolanta Wilczur Anna Dymna. The village’s existing doctor, Doctor Pawlicki [Andrzej Kopiczyński], grows wary of this newcomer and eventually sues Wilczur for using his surgical instruments, setting off a courtroom drama that unsettles the quiet community.
The case takes an extraordinary turn when an expert witness, Dobraniecki [Piotr Fronczewski], identifies the missing surgeon and restores a sliver of truth to a life that had been buried. With that recognition, Wilczur begins to piece together the memories he thought were gone forever, and the truth of his past starts to come back into focus. He learns that the girl he saved in the village is his daughter, and that his wife died of tuberculosis not long after he left, leaving their child in an orphanage before fate brought him back into her life.
The reunion that follows is quiet but powerful, as a man who believed his identity was lost discovers not only who he is but how deeply the bonds of family endure. Maria grows up and, in time, marries Leszek Czyński [Tomasz Stockinger], the son of a local noble family, linking two lineages and offering a sense of continuity to a world that has tested them all. The story remains anchored in themes of memory, reconciliation, and the enduring pull of kinship, even as the backdrop of a changing Poland adds texture to a life marked by medical genius, personal mystery, and the stubborn resilience of the human heart.
