Set during the Meiji Restoration, it follows Ryoma Sakamoto, seen as the architect of the Tokugawa shogunate’s fall. Branded an outlaw by his clan and pursued by the government, he is reviled by shogunate loyalists for championing Japan’s opening to Western technology, hoping a modern army and navy would eventually let Japan defeat the West.
