In a stark glimpse from 1990, Paul Ferris sits in his cell at Barlinnie Prison in Glasgow, reflecting on a childhood shaped by loyalty, fear, and the weight of violence. His father, Willie Ferris, drilled into him a blunt rulebook: beware strangers, stay loyal, be a “lion,” and never imitate others’ actions. Those lessons are tested early when Paul witnesses the Banks brothers carry out an armed robbery. The encounter turns cruel as the brothers harass Paul and kill his beloved dog, planting the seeds of a personal code built on anger and restraint.

As a teenager, Paul attends a party that goes violently off the rails when the Banks brothers crash it and wreck the house. In a moment of blinding fury, he retrieves a knife and returns to find two of the brothers assaulting his girlfriend. He wounds them and escapes, but the fallout pours onto his family. His sister, Jenny Ferris, publicly admonishes him, reminding him that their older brother is in prison for murder. The weight of his family’s history gnaws at him as he begins to realize a troubling truth: he has found a sense of control in violence, even if it disturbs those around him.

The story shifts to Paul’s time behind bars, where he orchestrates the killing of one of the Banks brothers, a grim calculation that cements his acceptance of a violent path. Upon his release, he declines a celebratory party thrown by Glasgow godfather Arthur Thompson, recalling his father’s description of Thompson as “The Devil incarnate.” This confrontation marks the start of a tangled alliance. Paul argues with his wife, Anne Marie, over her fear of him facing prison or death, a tension that threads through the following chapters of their lives.

In a pub, Paul meets Arthur Thompson and his blunt, cocaine-fueled son, Junior “Fat Boy” Thompson. Arthur praises Paul for the prison hit and offers him a job, a gesture that feels both rewarding and dangerous. Paul remembers Arthur’s own brutal act—shooting a man in front of witnesses—and recalls that he and his friends had once taken money from the dead man’s wallet, a cache the police later confiscated during questioning. Arthur confides a troubling update: Junior has been duped out of more than £50,000 in a drugs scheme, and Paul is tasked with retrieving the money. It’s a job that binds him deeper to Arthur’s world.

A car bomb later claims Arthur’s mother and seriously injures Arthur, provoking a demand for accountability. Arthur commands Paul and Tam McGraw to uncover the culprits, with the Banks brothers again pointed to as suspects. Paul, meanwhile, finds a personal milestone in Anne Marie’s pregnancy, a twist of fate that humanizes his hardened exterior even as the path ahead grows darker.

Tensions within the Thompson clan flare when Junior reveals his jealousy of Paul, fueled by Arthur’s praise of the younger man. The rivalry erupts during a home invasion in which Paul intervenes to stop Junior from killing two Banks women. Junior lashes a father’s face in front of his children, an act that shocks Paul—especially given Anne Marie’s pregnancy and the reckoning he fears.

Growing disillusioned, Paul confesses to Anne Marie that he has become what he once despised and that he longs to leave Glasgow and turn away from crime. His attempt to break free is complicated when Junior and McGraw frame him for a hit on Arthur. The law eventually catches up with him: eighteen months in prison for possessing a weapon, and while he’s away, he learns that he is to become a father of a new son, and Anne Marie reveals that she no longer loves him.

Back on the street, Junior has Paul’s father beaten in an alley, crossing a line that Paul never imagined. The vendetta escalates when Junior is brutally killed outside Arthur’s home by a masked assailant who is identified as “Paul” by the getaway driver. Paul is later arrested for Junior’s murder. While behind bars, Arthur approves a campaign to wipe out Paul’s associates—Jimmy, Johnny, Bobby Glover, and Joe—working with McGraw to settle old scores. Paul learns of McGraw’s betrayal and vows revenge upon his release.

The case against Paul for Junior’s murder collapses when he is acquitted. In the closing act, McGraw narrowly survives an assassination attempt and boards a flight to Tenerife, only to notice Tam and Bob behind him on the plane, their fates seemingly sealed by the choices made in Glasgow.

The film closes with a concise account of the real-life fates behind the myth: Anne Marie and Paul have separated; Arthur Thompson dies of natural causes at 61 after years of power and violence; Junior Thompson’s murder remains unsolved; Arthur’s wife Rita Thompson never fully recovers from the losses and dies of a broken heart; Tam McGraw dies of a heart attack at 55; Bobby and Joe’s murders remain unsolved; and Paul Ferris himself remains in Glasgow, having turned his back on crime.

This sprawling portrait blends personal tragedy with the brutal realities of a city where loyalties run deep and the line between protector and predator is often blurred, offering a sober, unflinching look at a life defined by consequence, memory, and the elusive possibility of change.
