Based on a true story, the German crime drama follows impoverished Italian glazier Willy Forst, who, enamored with French hotel maid Rosa Valletti, steals the Mona Lisa from the Louvre to impress her. When she proves fickle, he confesses, is jailed, and claims he stole it to return the work to Italy, gaining hero status. RKO released the film in the U.S. as The Theft of the Mona Lisa.
