In 1858 France, Emperor Louis‑Napoleon dispatches Captain Renault, Minister La Roche and Major Nicolet to Normandy to root out a rebel network. Lady Christiane, niece of the Marquis de Montableau, leads the underground as the Masked Cavalier, claiming the legendary Monte Cristo treasure—encoded on a sword—has been bequeathed to her to fund the uprising. Her uncle, the only one who can read the sword’s symbols, scorns her defiance. La Roche seizes the sword and imprisons the Marquis; Christiane later recovers it, only to be captured by Renault, who returns the weapon to La Roche.
