The Summer of Sangaile 2015

Sangail is an ordinary teenage girl with big dreams of becoming a stunt pilot, but her struggles with self-confidence and vertigo keep her from stepping into a cockpit. The story begins with Sangail encountering another girl, Auste, at an exciting air show. Throughout the summer, she is staying at her parents’ lakeside villa in preparation for her senior year. Auste, having already completed high school, works as a waitress in the cafeteria of the local power plant.

As their friendship blossoms, Auste finds various ways to spend quality time alone with Sangail, and it’s clear that there is an attraction between the two. Auste invites Sangail to socialize with her lively group of friends, creating unforgettable summer memories. After a day of fun, Auste returns to her divorced mother’s apartment on the 20th floor, while Sangail heads back to her villa.

Throughout the film, there are poignant moments that reveal Sangail’s battle with self-harm, as she cuts herself in her bathroom. To help Sangail embrace both her inner and outer beauty, Auste employs photography and fashion. Their relationship deepens and evolves into romance, as they share their secrets and passions. Auste endeavors to assist Sangail in overcoming her self-destructive behavior, becoming her unwavering support.

Tension arises in Sangail’s home life, particularly in her interactions with her mother, which are often strained. Eventually, inspired by Auste, Sangail agrees to go on a stunt plane ride. However, when her vertigo manifests, she becomes agitated, directing her frustration at Auste. After reflecting on her behavior, Sangail apologizes for her outburst, realizing how much support she has in Auste. Motivated by this friendship, she commits to training herself to conquer her vertigo and fulfill her aspirations of flying.

The film culminates in a poignant two-year leap into the future, where both girls have followed their dreams, albeit on separate paths. Though Auste and Sangail are no longer an item, Auste has successfully gotten into fashion school, while Sangail is living her dream as a pilot, performing at air shows. This bittersweet conclusion showcases their growth and individual journeys, reminding us of the profound impact they had on each other’s lives.
