In the medina of Salé, a caftan shop places Mina at the front counter while her husband, Halim, works in the back room and mentors their young apprentice Youssef. The trio labor on Halim’s masterpiece, a blue caftan, as the couple’s affection and intimacy live alongside a quiet tension. Mina is loving and protective, yet she is keenly aware of Halim’s same-sex attraction and keeps a wary eye on Youssef, even as Halim sometimes seeks solace in a hammam, where he engages in clandestine activities away from the shop’s walls.
Mina’s health begins to fail, and she stops working, leaving the shop in Youssef’s hands while Halim cares for her at home. In this vulnerable moment, Youssef confesses his love for Halim, a declaration Halim does not welcome, rebuffing him and preserving the familiar boundaries of their lives. Yet as Mina’s condition worsens, she becomes more observant of the growing closeness between Youssef and her husband, and a bond starts to form between Mina and Youssef as they navigate pain, trust, and the evolving dynamics of family and work.
Shortly before her death, Mina gives her tacit approval for Halim to pursue a loving relationship with Youssef, sealing a fragile understanding among them. After Mina dies, Halim finishes the blue caftan at home and the two men carry her bier to the cemetery, Mina’s presence lingering in the finished garment and in the quiet, shared memory of what binds them together.
