The Spiritual Boxer 1975

Set in the waning days of the Qing Dynasty, stories of spiritual boxers circulate as legends—the fighters believed to draw Taoist blessings to gain almost invincible martial arts power. When his master Master Chi Keung Chiang Yang is too drunk to perform a demonstration for the crowd, the conman Hsiao Chien is forced to step in, pretending to be possessed by various gods and performing their martial arts styles. Although some onlookers see through the ruse at first, the moment he dives into a canal and rain suddenly pours from the sky, the scene is interpreted by many as a sign that he truly is a spiritual boxer with magical powers.

Hsiao Chien helps poor locals when they are preyed upon by local gangs, and he receives unexpected support from the orphan girl Jin Lian Lin Chen-Chi. She does not approve of using tricks to earn money, but she still aids him in other plans, such as helping Ah Jin Ai Fei gain approval to marry Peony Chan Mei-Hua. The story balances humor with street-level courage as these relationships deepen and the community begins to believe in their own strength.

When the predatory loans of loanshark Liu Deruei [Shih Chung-Tien] threaten the town, Hsiao Chien confronts him and unsettles him with his clever tricks. He then teaches the locals basic kung fu, and together they manage to rout Liu Deruei’s gang in a tense confrontation. Liu Deruei, not easily deterred, brings in his allies—Shum [Lee Hoi-Sang] and Jiu [Ng Hong-Sang]—to finish the job. Shum demonstrates to Liu Deruei how Hsiao Chien’s tricks are performed, challenging the apparent mystique of the conman.

Undeterred by the danger, Liu Deruei presses on and the chase sweeps out of town. Master Chi Keung is nearby, taking a drink, as Hsiao Chien receives guidance in the right kung fu techniques to withstand the onslaught. The training helps him hold his ground against Shum and Jiu, and the turning point comes when Ah Jin arrives with the police to restore order. They arrest Shum and Jiu for robbery, leaving the village with a newfound respect for courage, community, and the potential power of honest self-defense.

In this story of deception and redemption, the lines between trickery and true skill blur, and the town learns that real strength can come from unity, discipline, and the mentorship of a master who believes in teaching the next generation how to defend themselves and their neighbors.
