Quentin Compson is a 17-year-old girl in the small Mississippi town of Jefferson. She lives with her step-uncle, Jason Compson, who has practically raised Quentin since her mother, Caddy Compson, abandoned her.

Jason serves as the provider for a sprawling household, supporting several relatives and dependents. He helps manage the family’s needs along with his other step-brother, and a mute, mentally handicapped boy named Benjy. The house is also watched over by Jason’s mother and by Dilsey, the loyal housekeeper, with Luster helping to look after Benjy. The arrangement is tense, practical, and bound by money, shelter, and the complex bonds of kinship.

Quentin grows restless and loses interest in continuing her schooling. When a carnival rolls into town, she becomes drawn to Charlie Busch, a carny worker who tries to seduce her. The lure of the carnival contrasts with the quiet severity of her home life, and her curiosity pushes at the boundaries set by those around her.

Caddy Compson returns to town and attempts a tentative reunion with Quentin, but she sides with Jason because she needs shelter and money. Caddy flirts with Earl Snopes, who hints at intimacy and is met with Jason’s stern rebuke for such talk. The undercurrents of desire, money, and protection ripple through the family, adding strain to already fraught relationships.

Benjy’s outburst when he catches Quentin sneaking out deepens the family crisis, leading Jason to decide that Benjy must be committed. This moment crystallizes the harsh choices facing the household and foreshadows the tough decisions that will follow for everyone involved.

A frustrated Quentin then contemplates running away with Busch, claiming she can secure $3,000. She steals the money Jason had saved for her future, a pivotal act that tests loyalties and exposes the true nature of the people around her. To test the newcomer’s real intentions, Jason confronts Busch and offers him a stark choice: the girl or the money.

Quentin is crushed when she realizes what Busch is really after. In the aftermath, she returns to Jason and promises to be more mature in their future, a fragile vow born of disappointment and a longing for stability. The film’s quiet, intimate tone centers on the fragile web of family, desire, and duty in a world where money and shelter shape every move.
