On a starry forest night, Clumsy Smurf, Hefty Smurf, and Panicky Smurf push a cart of smurfberries that’s missing a wheel, trying to decide how to pass the long hours. With the cart immobile, the trio gathers around a crackling campfire, roasting berries and trading lighthearted jabs as the warmth and glow flicker over their faces. To chase away the boredom, Clumsy suggests telling a ghost story, and the mood shifts as the tale unfolds, with Narrator Smurf stepping in to share his own eerie take on the night.
In the Narrator’s story, the Smurfs rally to celebrate a new contest: the Smurfberry Harvest. Papa Smurf Papa Smurf announces that whoever collects the most smurfberries will receive a medal, and a sense of friendly rivalry quickly blossoms. The forest becomes a hive of activity as buckets are filled and the chase for berries spreads outward. Curious and competitive, Gutsy Smurf shadows Brainy Smurf, who has won this contest nine times, hoping to uncover the secret behind his success. Their investigation leads them to a forbidden place called Smurfy Hollow, a location steeped in legend where the Headless Horseman is said to roam and a hidden patch of berries grows in abundance.
Gutsy imagines a scare as the perfect way to level the playing field: he crafts a shadowy figure of the Headless Horseman to spook Brainy. The plan works a little too well, sending Brainy scrambling in fear while Gutsy seizes the chance to harvest the secret patch for himself. But the ruse backfires when Brainy unexpectedly wanders into a trap laid by Gargamel, the crafty foe who is always plotting to capture Smurfs. The contest’s clock keeps ticking as the others approach with their filled buckets, and the tension between brains and bravery comes to a head.
At the judging moment, Gutsy returns with a grand, heavy load of smurfberries and is proclaimed the winner. Yet a shadow of doubt lingers as [Suspicious Smurf] wonders where Brainy has vanished to, suspecting foul play. Gutsy leaves the festival grounds to search for Brainy, and Smurfette soon joins him in the forest to unravel the mystery. They discover Brainy trapped in one of Gargamel’s cages, a grim discovery that is followed by the arrival of Gargamel’s ally, Azrael, who underscores the danger looming over the Smurfs.
With Brainy imprisoned, the trio scrambles to regroup. They duck for cover as the Headless Horseman materializes, the legendary rider chasing them toward the covered bridge that locals say can trap the ghost forever. In a desperate bid for safety, the Smurfs hop onto a bat’s back and duck across the bridge’s span, escaping the spectral rider just in time. Gargamel and Azrael arrive at the bridge, but the Headless Horseman can’t pass through the magical barrier, and the wizard’s taunting is met with a sudden, fiery gesture from the ghostly figure, who launches a flaming pumpkin that shatters the bridge’s floor and sends them plunging into the river and downstream over the falls.
Returning home, the Smurfs find courage and humility blooming from adversity. Gutsy and Brainy talk through their failings—Gutsy admitting his jealousy over Brainy’s success, Brainy admitting his own selfish secrecy about the patch—and Papa Smurf recognizes their growth. Rather than keeping the medal himself, Gutsy offers it to Brainy, who insists that Gutsy should wear it. The two wrestle playfully for the prize, and it slips from their hands, landing looped around Lazy Smurf’s neck, which unavoidably designates him as the winner in a humorous twist. As the celebration resumes, Papa thanks the Headless Horseman, who turns out to be a goat that the Head Smurf magic once transformed into a ghostly figure for the night’s prank.
With the Narrator’s ghost story complete, Hefty Smurf proclaims he wasn’t scared, though a bat screech prompts him to leap into the Narrator’s arms. Clumsy looks up to see an unanticipated swarm of bats closing in, and the four Smurfs skid into a frantic sprint back to the safety of their village, the night’s fright giving way to laughter as they retreat behind the familiar walls. The campfire’s glow fades, leaving them wiser about rivalry, risk, and the odd blend of magic and mischief that makes Smurf life so unique.
