Vic DeSalvo and his brother Goody DeSalvo are successful New Jersey trucking magnates with a shared dream: to break into Hollywood as producers. Vic relentlessly pitches his scripts and ideas from one network executive to another, but every bid is met with polite refusals. The brothers’ hard work and street-smarts keep them moving forward, convinced that a big break is just around the corner.

Everything changes when Vic meets an executive from a second‑rate company who has just been fired for backing a show that drew zero viewers. In a bid for revenge and a chance to prove himself, this executive agrees to finance a pilot built around Vic’s material for a show called Sittin’ Pretty. The resulting pilot is a spectacular misfire—abysmal acting, a thin story, and a misguided delivery—but the failure only fuels Vic’s audacious ambition. With the director and star walking out, Vic resolves to take control, writing, directing, and performing in his own project.

To introduce himself to Hollywood’s inner circle, Vic throws a colossal party, hoping to catch the right eyes. Yet the turnout is dishearteningly sparse, and the only guest who makes an impression is Francine Kester, a statistician at a ratings agency. They fall in love, and her scientific eye for numbers sharpens Vic’s appetite for a bigger stage.

When Francine is passed over for a promotion by her philandering and incompetent boss, Mr. Sweeney, she confides in Vic that the ratings system can be gamed. By placing confederates in Nielsen households, the numbers can be skewed to boost a show’s apparent popularity. The duo hatches a plan to run a scam that could push Vic’s program to the top of the charts and make Hollywood sit up and notice.

The scheme works far beyond their wildest dreams: Vic’s show climbs to the top, and the awards circuit embraces him as the nation’s brightest new star. The triumph, however, is short-lived. The ratings agency uncovers the manipulation, and just as Vic accepts a prestigious award, the police close in and arrest him for fraud.

In a twist that mixes ambition with consequence, Vic and Francine still seal their partnership with a jailhouse wedding, choosing to face the fallout together as they navigate a world that has suddenly changed around them. The film lingers on the tension between clever hustle and ethical line-crossing, offering a sharp, ironic look at fame, numbers, and the price of getting what you think you want.
