Spanning 1945 to the present, three friends—Pavle, Stojan and Dragisa—take different paths: Pavle, a former commissar, becomes a schoolteacher; Stojan, once a bakery assistant, serves as a district committee secretary; Dragisa joins the secret police. In 1947 a love triangle erupts when Lena, who loves Pavle, marries him and becomes pregnant as Pavle is arrested. Stojan later accepts Lena and the child, but political upheavals drive all three toward an inevitable tragedy.
