Susanne Mallison [Claire Bloom] arrives at Tempelhof Airport in a worn, wind-swept post-war West Berlin, where life is still fragile and the border with East Berlin is only just opening to residents from the West. The city bears the scars of conflict, with the Reichstag in ruin and streets lined with makeshift signs of a divided world. Susanne, accompanied by Bettina [Hildegard Knef], spends a night in a lively nightclub and wakes to the stark contrast of the eastern sector, a place where posters of Stalin and Walter Ulbricht loom large and barrier gates open only with the right papers.
