Susanne Mallison [Claire Bloom] arrives at Tempelhof Airport in a worn, wind-swept post-war West Berlin, where life is still fragile and the border with East Berlin is only just opening to residents from the West. A boy named Horst [Dieter Krause] becomes a crucial, if enigmatic, ally. He appears from the East side with a sense of childhood innocence and a practical spark, guiding Ivo and Susanne as they navigate the labyrinth of border controls and hidden paths. The boy’s presence is a small, humane thread in a story thick with fear and calculation; he follows Ivo closely, and his quiet warmth toward the man who has risked so much for a chance at freedom hints at a humanity that persists even in the harshest of regimes.

In a tense sequence, Ivo secures shelter for the night by paying a local woman to host them, and the two share a moment of genuine tenderness. A kiss marks a turning point, and the implication that they might sleep together lingers in the air as the world outside grows colder and more dangerous. The plan moves forward when Kastner appears with a laundry lorry, and the trio hides in the back as it heads toward the crossing point. The weight of the moment—the danger, the risk, the fragile possibility of a future—hangs in the air as they ride.

The crossing itself becomes a high-stakes countdown. A stall in the engine, a restart that comes too late for safety, and a final act of self-sacrifice shape the most devastating moment of the escape. Kastner manages to restart the lorry, but attention is drawn to the vehicle, and the boy on a bicycle who watched from a distance is spotted by a guard. The discovery triggers a desperate bid to make contact; Ivo dives from the back of the truck to draw attention away, and Susanne reaches out in a last, aching gesture to grasp his hand as the vehicle passes the final hurdle of the neutral zone. In a brutal, selfless instant, Ivo is killed by the guards, sacrificing his chance to live in the West so that Susanne might escape to safety.
