The Law and Jake Wade 1958

In the small western town of Morganville, a reformed criminal Jake Wade breaks his former partner, Clint Hollister, out of jail in a tense, dusty gambit that sets off a dangerous chain of events. Wade refuses to reveal where he hid the $20,000 from their bank robbery and even warns Hollister to leave the territory. Wade then heads back to Cold Stream, where he serves as marshal, only to have Hollister and his men close in, kidnapping his fiancée, Peggy, and forcing Wade to lead them to the buried money.

The trio embarks on a long trek into the desert, a grueling journey that quietly reveals the full extent of the criminals’ pasts and the strain it places on Peggy as she watches her husband’s former life come back to threaten them all. After several trials, they reach a ghost town, where Wade finally reveals the location of the loot: the money is buried three feet deep in the cemetery, inside a saddlebag. With Comanche scouts spotted in the area, the group takes shelter in a deserted saloon, and Wade is tied to a chair while Hollister goes to scout for the natives. As night falls, eerie calls drift from outside, and Wade warns they are surrounded by the approaching threat.

The following morning, Hollister returns to a renewed danger as the natives attack with brutal force. In the chaos, Peggy frees Wade, and they attempt a daring escape, but Hollister intercepts them. After burying the dead from the skirmish, Wade reiterates that the money lies three feet deep in the cemetery, inside a saddlebag. He then digs up the saddlebag and, to everyone’s shock, pulls out a pistol from it, prompting his companions to lay down their guns. Wade then asks Ortero to take Peggy away, and they ride out of town as the tense standoff lingers in the air.

The confrontation between Wade and Hollister erupts again in the street, and Wade ends Hollister’s threat with a fatal shot. Hearing the gunfire, Peggy and Ortero return for Wade, their paths now linked to an uneasy, sharpened outcome in the wake of the violence they’ve witnessed.
