William Bonney, Scott Brady, cheated out of a half month’s pay, pockets the money anyway and rides off, quickly earning his infamous nickname Billy the Kid as word of his quick draw and defiant streak spreads across the territory.
Pat Garrett, a cowboy who considers Billy a friend, helps him find work at British land baron John H. Tunstall Paul Cavanagh’s vast New Mexico ranch. With Tunstall’s enterprise and influence in the region, rustlers become a constant threat, and Garrett and Billy join forces to guard the property while navigating the uneasy lines between loyalty and law.
Billy tries to go straight, partly because he has fallen in love with Nita Maxwell Betta St. John and dreams of a calmer life. The romance gives him a glimpse of what a future without bloodshed might look like, even as the frontier around them remains volatile and unforgiving.
Bob Ollinger [Alan Hale Jr.], a brutal foreman, resents Billy’s presence and enlists the help of the crooked lawman Sheriff Tom Watkins [Steve Darrell] to root out trouble. The looming threat of arrest and a relentless pursuit push Billy toward a more cautious, but no less dangerous, path.
A posse closes in, and the tragedy escalates when Tunstall is killed by mistake. Billy shoots the man who fired the fatal round, a moment that hardens the feud and cements Billy’s place in a legend built on vengeance as much as on survival.
The governor of New Mexico contends with the fallout and seeks to replace Watkins, offering Garrett the chance to step in. Garrett hesitates until martial law is promised and Billy is to be shot on sight, a demand that deepens the rift between the law and the legend.
Billy tries to cooperate and walk away from violence, but the pressure from Olinger’s faction intensifies, driving him toward a final, fatal confrontation. He defeats the immediate threat, but the path to peace remains blocked by continuing hostility and a system that seems determined to define him by violence.
In a poignant twist, Billy clings to a wedding ring and the dream of a life with Nita, hoping for a fresh start in Mexico. Yet the frontier does not grant amnesty, and the tale ends with Billy being shot dead by Garrett, leaving behind a myth that would outpace the man himself.
