The Last Princess 2016

In 1925, Korea is under Japanese rule, and the 13-year-old Princess Deokhye Son Ye-jin is uprooted to Japan to receive schooling. She longs for the homeland and the life she left behind, and she makes several attempts to return after finishing her studies. Each attempt is thwarted by the pro-Japanese grip of General Han Taek-soo Yoon Je-moon, whose authority keeps her far from home. She also carries the weight of family history, including her brother Yi Un, as the political climate around her grows increasingly tense and unforgiving. Through it all, her resolve to be with her people remains a quiet, burning thread that guides her through a life split between two worlds.

One day, a renewed connection enters her life in the form of a childhood friend, Kim Jang-han Park Hae-il, a Japanese army officer who is secretly aligned with the Korean independence movement. Their reunion rekindles a fragile hope: a plan to secure Deokhye’s safe return and a chance to bring her closer to the people she is destined to serve. The two forge a dangerous path together, knowing that any misstep could end in disaster. The dream of escape grows sharper as the two navigate the labyrinth of imperial politics, loyalty, and the personal cost of resistance.

Kim Jang-han’s vision culminates in a bold, clandestine operation to move Deokhye and her brother Yi Un to Shanghai, where the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea operates in exile. The mission, marked by careful calculations and a high-stakes risk, is ultimately thwarted when Han Taek-soo uncovers the plan, and Deokhye and her ally lose contact. The failure compounds her sense of isolation within the Japanese empire, a life path shadowed by the constant threat of discovery and reprisal.

In 1931, Deokhye is compelled into a political marriage with Count Takeyuki So Kim Jae-uck. The union produces a daughter the following year, but it also ushers in a deep personal struggle; Deokhye’s mental health deteriorates, and she eventually experiences schizophrenia. This chapter of her life is heavy with stigma and isolation, a stark reminder of how the era’s pressures could twist personal happiness into enduring suffering.

Meanwhile, Kim Jang-han’s own trajectory shifts toward journalism, and decades after their separation he locates Deokhye in a Japanese mental hospital. He becomes a steadfast advocate, pursuing every possible channel to reunite her with her homeland. His persistence echoes the broader, quieter fight for recognition and rights that runs through the years of occupation.

At last, his efforts bear fruit: in 1962, Deokhye is permitted to return to Korea. The film traces the arduous arc of a princess whose life was defined as much by exile and political upheaval as by personal resilience and the longing for a place to call home. The story remains a testament to endurance, memory, and the complicated bonds that survive even the longest separations.
