The Irony of Fate. The Sequel 2007

The impetus comes from Pavlik, a friend of Evgeniy Lukashin [Andrey Myagkov], who seeks to ease Evgeniy’s loneliness by orchestrating a scenario that would echo the old days.

Pavlik’s scheme centers on Lukashin’s son, Kostya Lukashin [Konstantin Khabenskiy], who is sent to St. Petersburg to act in the same manner as his father did three decades earlier. The plan unfolds with a clear objective: recreate the pattern of flirtations and misunderstandings that once tangled the parents, and see if history can repeat itself with a new generation. The mission comes with a key stop in flat 12, where Kostya meets Nadezhda [Elizaveta Boyarskaya], who is the daughter of Nadya from the first film. She has a fiancé, Irakliy [Sergei Bezrukov], a businessman whose presence heats up the competition for Nadya’s heart. Pavlik’s intricate choreography depends on pulling Irakliy away from the flat and then waiting for Nadya’s mother to arrive; she is meant to call Evgeniy Lukashin, reigniting a link to the past and pushing the present into motion.

As the plan advances, the plot becomes a two-front contest over a woman: Kostya against Irakliy, and Evgeniy against Ippolit [Yuriy Yakovlev]. Kostya’s maneuvering to win Nadya’s affection collides with Irakliy’s stubborn confidence, while Evgeniy’s ongoing dynamic with Ippolit tests the older generations’ stubborn pride and lingering ties. The tension is punctuated by the presence and influence of Nadya’s family, including Nadya’s mother Nadezhda Vasilevna [Barbara Brylska], whose arrival lends gravity to the unfolding triggers of the scheme and the emotional stakes involved.
