On a remote Canadian island, Morgan and his friends on a hunting trip are suddenly besieged by a swarm of giant wasps. Seeking shelter they find a barn ruled by an enormous killer chicken. As they explore, they uncover an ecosystem of oversized animals, with the most perilous being giant rats that prepare to clash with the human intruders.

On a remote island off the coast of British Columbia, a mysterious substance bubbles up from the ground. Mr. Skinner (John McLiam) and Mrs. Skinner (Ida Lupino) treat it as a gift from God and feed it to their chickens, which grow far larger than humans. The substance is also eaten by rats, wasps, and grubs, turning the island into a haven for giant vermin. One night, a swarm of giant rats kills Mr. Skinner after his car tire is punctured in the forest.
Morgan (Marjoe Gortner) is a professional football player on the island for a hunting trip with his buddies when one of them is stung to death by giant wasps. After ferrying his friends back to the mainland, Morgan returns to investigate. Also thrown into the mix are Thomas (Tom Stovall) and Rita (Belinda Balaski), an expecting couple; Jack Bensington (Ralph Meeker), the owner of a dog food company who hopes to market the substance; and Lorna Scott (Pamela Franklin), a bacteriologist and Bensington’s assistant.
When Morgan locates and dynamites the giant wasps’ enormous nest, the group ends up trapped in the Skinners’ farmhouse, surrounded by giant rats. Morgan’s friend Brian (Jon Cypher) is among those killed, along with Bensington and Mrs. Skinner, as the rats overrun the building. The survivors make a desperate bid to escape and survive the night.
In a dramatic turn, Morgan blows up a nearby dam, flooding the area and drowning the rats, whose weight makes swimming impossible. As the waters recede, the group piles the bodies and scorches them, spilling the jars of “F.O.T.G.” and gasoline over the remains. Yet not all the jars are destroyed: several are swept away, drifting to a mainland farm. The substance is consumed by dairy cows there, and in the film’s closing scene, schoolchildren are shown unwittingly drinking the tainted milk, implying that they, too, may undergo abnormal growth.
