Mitch MacAfee, Jeff Morrow, a civil aeronautical engineer, spots an unidentified flying object during a radar test flight near the North Pole. Three jet fighters scramble to intercept the mysterious craft, but one aircraft vanishes without a trace. Officials react with anger toward MacAfee, suspecting a hoax even as the mystery deepens and questions about what truly happened in the frigid skies linger.
Returning to New York with Sally Caldwell, Mara Corday, a mathematician who helped interpret the data, their plane comes under attack once more. With their pilot killed, they crash-land in the Adirondack mountains, where Pierre Broussard, Louis Merrill, a French-Canadian farmer, rescues them and reports seeing La Carcagne, a giant monster bird that he believes stalks the region.
MacAfee’s account is greeted with skepticism at first, but a string of additional disappearances forces the authorities to take the threat seriously. The creature is described as enormous, “as big as a battleship,” and is rumored to originate from an antimatter galaxy, a being whose power seems to outmatch conventional military forces. The investigation widens to include scientists and generals who must sift through evidence and confrontation with a threat that defies easy explanation.
With the clock ticking, MacAfee teams with Caldwell, Dr. Karol Noymann, Edgar Barrier a scientist studying the creature’s unusual energy signatures, Lt. Gen. Edward Considine, Morris Ankrum, and General Van Buskirk, Robert Shayne. Together, they mount a plan to counter the invincible foe by exploiting a critical vulnerability in its antimatter-based defenses, a chase that pushes them to the edge of science and courage.
The final confrontation erupts in Manhattan as the colossal bird plummets on the city, targeting symbolic landmarks like the Empire State Building and the United Nations building. The team deploys a daring solution using exotic muonic atoms launched from the tail gun position of a B-25 bomber. The carefully crafted strike collapses the creature’s antimatter shield, allowing missiles to strike true and kill the monster. As the beast falls toward the Atlantic, a solitary claw sinks beneath the waves, marking the end of a crisis that began in the ice and ended in a struggle to outthink an otherworldly might.
