This film is inspired by real events that unfold in Wellfleet, Massachusetts, during November 1951. It begins with Bernie Webber, portrayed by Chris Pine, nervously preparing for a date with a woman he has yet to meet, named Miriam Penttinen. Their initial encounter sparks an immediate connection, leading to a romantic evening. As they spend time together, the chemistry culminates in Miriam sharing a kiss with Bernie before they part ways.
Fast forward to February 17, 1952, at a dance, where their relationship deepens. Miriam unexpectedly proposes to Bernie, who hesitates and initially refuses, leaving her heartbroken. However, he soon clarifies that his career in the Coast Guard has been weighing on his decision. With Miriam reassuring him of her unwavering support, they solidify their commitment to each other.
Meanwhile, a fierce storm wreaks havoc on the ocean, threatening the lives of the crews aboard the SS Fort Mercer and SS Pendleton. The tempest swells dangerously, causing catastrophic damage to the ships. As chaos ensues, Ray Sybert, played by Casey Affleck, devises a plan to stabilize their vessel by running it aground, desperately trying to keep the crew safe.
In response to the brewing crisis, Bernie’s superior, Daniel Cluff, portrayed by Eric Bana, assigns Bernie and his team, which includes Richard Livesley (Ben Foster), to brave the turbulent waters in the CG 36500 motorboat to execute a daring rescue mission.
As the storm intensifies, the men aboard the Coast Guard boat confront monstrous waves that threaten to capsize them. Back at the station, an anxious Miriam pleads with Cluff to ensure their safe return. Despite her distress, she is sent away, leading to a harrowing incident where she loses control of her car and becomes stranded in the snow. Fortunately, a kind stranger, the wife of a local fisherman, helps Miriam regain her composure.
In a tense moment, the engineers manage to stabilize the Pendleton long enough for the Coast Guard to arrive. However, the situation grows dire as there is not enough space for all the men aboard the lifeboat. With bravery and determination, they begin the dangerous descent down a Jacob’s ladder into the awaiting rescue boat. Tragedy strikes when one crew member, Tiny Myers, meets a grim fate.
After enduring excruciating conditions, Bernie contacts the station to report a successful rescue but reveals they have lost their compass, making navigation perilous. In a heartwarming display of community, Miriam and local citizens flash their headlights along the shoreline to guide him back to safety. Ultimately, the Coast Guard arrives home, hailed as heroes, and Bernie and Miriam share an emotional reunion.
The film closes with the poignant reminder of their lasting love, detailing that Bernie Webber, alongside his courageous crew members, was lauded for his bravery, and that he and Miriam remained married until his passing in 2009.
