As dawn breaks on January 16, 1942, US Navy airmen pilot Harold Dixon, bombardier Tony Pastula, and radioman Gene Aldrich embark on a critical patrol mission over the South Pacific from the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. Their journey takes a harrowing turn when their Douglas TBD Devastator torpedo bomber encounters unforeseen difficulties, leaving them disoriented and adrift in the vast expanse of the open ocean. With fuel levels rapidly diminishing and communication with their command becoming increasingly tenuous, Dixon makes a pivotal decision to return to the carrier.

However, fate has other plans in store. Radioman Aldrich announces that they are now beyond the range for any potential rescue, thrusting the trio into a dire situation. With their bearings lost and resources dwindling, Dixon instructs his crew to prepare for an emergency landing, meticulously organizing their scarce survival gear for what promises to be a treacherous ordeal.

Despite the adversity, their makeshift vessel proves resilient enough to brave the challenges of the open sea. After a successful ditching, the crew finds themselves at the mercy of an endless ocean, relying solely on their collective ingenuity and determination. Aldrich attempts to craft a makeshift fishing rod, which results in a gruesome catch – a shark that becomes their sole means of sustenance. As the days drag on and dehydration takes its toll, they are forced to resort to drinking their own urine for survival. Tensions flair when Aldrich suffers a nasty bite from a lurking predator, and Dixon narrowly escapes being snatched up by a bird he had just retrieved after Aldrich had shot it.

As desperation mounts, simmering tensions culminate in Aldrich confronting Dixon, who reluctantly admits to dozing off at the controls just before their emergency landing, a lapse that precipitated their current plight. This revelation, however, leads to a modicum of forgiveness between them, as they band together to fashion makeshift oars from their shoes and row toward an uncertain fate.

In a moment of levity amidst their grim existence, they playfully agree that the first man to spot land will be treated to a meal cooked by the others, underscoring their fragile hope. However, this glimmer of optimism is short-lived when a ferocious storm sweeps across the ocean, threatening to shatter their slim grasp on life.

Yet, at the brink of hopelessness, fortune graces them with a glimpse of land on the horizon – an island named PukaPuka, where they ultimately wash ashore, battered yet alive.

As the film draws to a close, it is revealed that Dixon and his crew spent an astonishing 34 days adrift at sea, their oars dipping into the water over 1,000 miles, a testament to their indomitable spirit. The grueling ordeal earns Dixon the prestigious Navy Cross, a distinction that transforms his life. With the weight of these experiences bearing down on him, Dixon resolves never to fly again, closing the chapter on his aviation days.

In a poignant turn, Tony’s journey reaches an abrupt end, as he is unable to continue his service in the Navy. His ashes were scattered at sea following his passing in 1986, a final tribute that brought closure to those who loved him. Conversely, Aldrich finds a different path; he opts to remain a radioman and eventually marries Tony’s sister, Frances, in 1946. Their intertwined stories illuminate a powerful truth: even amidst hardship and loss, hope can lead to new beginnings.
