Jack Simmons, Peter Billingsley, lives with his widowed mother Anne Bloom. When she scrambles to stretch their last $50 for groceries, Jack spots a Yamaha YZ-80 two-stroke racing motorcycle and buys it from Max Gavin Allen. Almost at once, Jack realizes the bike is not just a toy—it’s self-aware. His mother is furious that the money went to a dirt bike and confiscates it, selling it to a local shop owner named Mr. Zak Al Evans to recoup the $50. Yet the bike has a stubborn sense of loyalty; it returns in the middle of a tense baseball game to visit Jack, a moment that hints at something magical about the machine.

To make good on the debt, Mr. Zak offers a solution: Jack can work off his balance by delivering goods with the bike. This new arrangement pulls Jack into the orbit of his longtime circle. He also plays on a Little League team sponsored by the Doghouse, a hot dog joint run by Mike Patrick Collins, a friend of Jack’s late father who still looks out for him. The Doghouse itself is struggling financially and becomes the target of demolition by town banker Mr. Hodgkins Stuart Pankin to clear land for a second Hodgkins Bank. Mazie Clavell Sage Parker, a teller and coach on a rival Little League team, grows disillusioned with Hodgkins’ ruthless, every-man-for-himself approach and starts dating Mike, whom she sees as an honest business owner facing real adversity.

Jack and his ally Bo Chad Sheets decide to probe Hodgkins’ plans, and they use the bike’s unusual capabilities to help uncover the truth behind Hodgkins’ pursuit of the Doghouse. Their efforts lead them to insights about Hodgkins’ finances, including that the Doghouse land isn’t ideal for Hodgkins’ bank and that his own personal account isn’t as robust as the public believes. Hodgkins learns of the boy’s interference and calls in help: Max’s presence on Hodgkins’ Little League team attracts Arthur “Big Slime” Weasel Forshaw and his biker gang, who previously crossed paths with Jack.

When Hodgkins closes in on Jack’s home, he enlists the police, led by Chief Salt John William Galt, to impound the dirt bike in exchange for staving off a foreclosure on his own loan. Mazie and Mike step forward to help, paying the impound fee so Jack can reclaim his bike.

The town’s groundbreaking ceremony for the bank’s construction becomes a flashpoint. Hodgkins’ plan to bulldoze the Doghouse collides with Jack’s Little League team, who crash the event and spark a pie-fight involving Max, Hodgkins, and Big Slime’s crew. In the chaos that follows, the dirt bike whisks Hodgkins away, and Jack uses the moment to speak plainly about Hodgkins’ and Mike’s financial troubles and to propose a plan that could benefit everyone.

A year later, the community has changed. Hodgkins arrives in a goofy hot dog suit to celebrate a new shopping center that now houses a renovated Doghouse and the Hodgkins Bank. Bo, once shy with girls, is now among the crowd of admirers. Jack’s mother has found steady work, while Mike and Mazie are married and expect their first child. Salt, who faced consequences for his earlier actions, has shifted to a security role at the bank. Big Slime, now known by his real name Arthur, has left the biker life and taken a bank teller job in the newly opened Hodgkins Bank.

With the town transformed, the dirt bike’s magic seems to pause, then return when a new child discovers it. Jack hands the bike off to another youngster, and the bike’s magic appears to reawaken for a new rider, suggesting a gift that is meant to help embolden the next generation rather than to stay with one family forever. The film closes on a note of communal uplift, where family, friends, and neighbors have found a path forward together, buoyed by a small motorcycle that seemed, for a time, to bend the rules of possibility.
