Adapted from Stendhal’s novel, the film follows noble Fabrice del Dongo, who abandons his clerical career for love, upsetting those around him, the Countess of Sanseverina, whose desire provokes envy. In prison, Fabrice falls for the jailer’s daughter and plans escape, but she swears to Virgin Mary never to see him again, highlighting love versus duty.
