As the extraordinary cat-like alien, Zunar-J-5/9 Doric-4-7 (Jake), emerges from his beleaguered spaceship, he finds himself in the custody of the United States government. With his Mother Ship on the verge of departing our solar system, Jake must rely on his resourcefulness to repair his vessel and facilitate a rescue mission. His extraordinary abilities are amplified by a special collar, which grants him telekinetic and telepathic powers.

Jake's initial investigation leads him to the Energy Research Laboratory (E.R.L.), where he becomes intrigued by Frank Wilson's (Frank) unorthodox theory on the UFO's power source. Frank, often dismissed by his colleagues, surprisingly hits upon the correct solution. Jake's keen interest in Frank is piqued, and he follows him to his office, where the scientist affectionately dubs him "Jake".

The sudden arrival of Liz Bartlet (Liz), upset over Frank's light-hearted approach amidst the gravity of their scientific discovery, prompts Frank to intervene with a calming presence. As tensions ease, Jake reveals his true nature to Frank, showcasing his extraordinary abilities and proposing an exchange: advanced knowledge of energy in return for Frank's assistance.

As the evening unfolds, Jake and Frank concoct a plan to infiltrate the military base where Jake's spaceship is being held, while Liz unexpectedly joins them for dinner with her feline companion, Lucybelle. Jake feigns illness, allowing them to proceed undetected. At the base, Frank employs a backup collar to fly to the top of the ship and attach a diagnostic device.

Jake discovers that his ship requires an essential element he calls "Org 12", which Frank later recognizes as elemental gold due to its atomic weight. With this crucial revelation, Jake and Frank's partnership is solidified, paving the way for their daring rescue mission.

As Frank fills Jake in on the crucial details back at his apartment, the duo's quest for a $120,000 treasure gain momentum. The arrival of Norman Link, a fellow associate of Frank's, sets the stage for an evening of horse racing and football games - all bets are off as Link has wagered a substantial amount on the outcome. Jake seizes the opportunity to employ his unique abilities, guiding Link's horse to victory, which in turn prompts Jake and Frank to persuade their colleague to join forces with them, leveraging his financial stake to amplify their efforts. However, just as they're gaining traction, a well-intentioned veterinarian, called in by Liz due to concerns about Jake's health, inadvertently knocks the telepathic pilot unconscious. Undeterred, Frank briefs Liz on the situation, and the group converges on a local pool hall where Link has placed his bets - only to discover that their chances of success have taken a drastic turn for the worse.

With time running out and the stakes higher than ever, they agree to engage in a high-stakes game of pool against Sarasota Slim, a seasoned hustler. Frank's initial attempt to utilize Jake's collar fails, but just as all hope seems lost, Jake regains consciousness, using his powers to manipulate the final moments of the game and emerge victorious - securing the funds needed to acquire the gold that will repair his ship. However, this success is short-lived, as industrial spy Stallwood, working for the nefarious Olympus, has been monitoring their activities, as have military authorities. Frank and Jake manage to evade both parties, only to find themselves facing a new challenge when Link, Liz, and Lucybelle fall into Olympus's clutches.

In a bold move, Jake decides to send his ship back to the Mother Ship and remain on Earth to rescue his friends, using a dilapidated biplane to infiltrate Olympus's helicopter and effect their liberation. The ensuing chaos culminates in the crash of the helicopter, leaving Olympus, Stallwood, and their cohorts at the mercy of the authorities - who presumably apprehend them. As Jake's friends are safely returned, he is granted permission to remain on Earth as a representative of an off-world "friendly power," and subsequently applies for and secures United States citizenship.
