Harry Morgan John Garfield is a sport-fishing boat captain whose business is faltering and whose family is feeling the pinch of hard times. Desperate to keep the family afloat, he becomes entangled with a slick, shady lawyer, Duncan Wallace Ford, who pitches a dangerous plan: smuggling eight Chinese men from Mexico into California aboard his boat, the Sea Queen. Amid the mounting pressure, he also crosses paths with Leona Charles Patricia Neal, whose presence introduces a glimmer of possibility and complicates his decisions.
As Duncan’s scheme begins to unravel, he tightens his grip, pressuring Harry into helping a gang of crooks orchestrate a racetrack heist by slipping out to sea with the gang and dodging authorities. Harry convinces himself that the illegal work will protect his family’s future, even as his wife, Lucy Morgan Phyllis Thaxter, grows wary and begs him to quit for the sake of the family.
When Wesley Park Juano Hernández arrives, Harry tries to send him away to keep him safe. The criminals reach the Sea Queen first, murder Wesley, and force Harry to carry out their escape. The surviving danger escalates as Duncan is found dead during the getaway, and Wesley’s body is dumped overboard, leaving Harry to grapple with guilt and fear while the clock ticks.
Armed with two hidden pistols that he had stashed away earlier, Harry fights back in a tense, shipboard shootout, killing the crooks one by one but sustaining grave injuries himself. The Sea Queen is towed to port the next day as investigators close in. Lucy rushes to Harry’s side and pleads for him to consider amputation of his injured arm to save his life, a grim choice he faces with quiet resolve. In a moment of battered tenderness, Harry reaffirms his love for Lucy before succumbing to his wounds as paramedics take him away in an ambulance. On the wharf, a hopeful yet unanswered question lingers when the Coast Guard officer offers no reassurance to Lucy, and Wesley’s son remains on the dock, waiting for a father who never returns.
