In a bustling, modern capitalist city where commerce seems to touch every corner of life, a hungry boy scavenges at the market and, in a moment of courage, saves a stray dog from a cruel salesman. An old woman passing by witnesses the act and reveals herself as a fairy. She grants the boy a peculiar gift: a caged bluebird that can neither be sold nor bought, but can be given as a gift. The boy hides the bird in his attic with the idea of showing it to his little sister, hoping to share something wonderful with her.

That night, the siblings creep up to the attic and meet their long-dead grandparents, who explain that the bluebird has been stolen by a cat named Puss. They reveal a hopeful truth: the bluebird contains happiness for everyone, so it must be rescued and set free. Spirit and determination grow as the children, joined by the dog, embark on a journey to recover the bird.

Their quest leads them to a wealthy man who sees the bluebird as a tool to start a war and conquer the world. He tempts the children with a feast of delicious foods, aiming to distract them from their mission. Yet the fairy intervenes, helping them slip away and continue their mission rather than surrender to temptation.

The path takes them into dark mines, where cheerful workers greet them and offer bread as a symbol of sustenance and solidarity. The fairy returns to bless their voyage, bestowing the eternal companions of humanity: Fire, Water, and Bread. The group learns that Puss has kidnapped the bluebird at the insistence of his mistress, Night, who intends to sell it to the rich man. Their plans are thwarted in a dramatic confrontation: Fire burns Night, Puss drowns in Water, and the boy manages to reclaim the bird from the rich man’s possession.

With the bluebird recovered, the boy suffers a fall from a clock tower, a perilous moment that tests their resolve. When morning comes, the truth dawns with it—the entire journey was a dream. Still, the siblings carry a sense of purpose and release the bluebird into the wild from the attic, trusting that its happiness will now belong to the world beyond their small circle.
