The Blue Butterfly 2004

Pete Carlton [Marc Donato] is a young Montreal boy with terminal cancer who loves butterflies and frequently watches the entomologist Alan Osborne [William Hurt] on his television show. His mother Teresa Carlton [Pascale Bussières] meets with Osborne to try to persuade him to take Pete to Costa Rica in search of the rare blue morpho butterfly, hoping it might hold the key to his recovery. Osborne initially dismisses the plan, but a phone call from Pete brings him back to their home, where he agrees to reconsider the journey.

They travel to a small Central American village, only to discover that the vast majority of blue morphos have already migrated. Heartache hangs in the air as they prepare to turn back, but they soon learn that one butterfly remains hidden deep in the jungle, sparking a renewed fire in Pete to press on. Pete’s determination to find the “magical” butterfly becomes a driving force for both of them, and the pursuit soon tests their resolve in ways they could not have anticipated.

Their quest leads them into danger as they chase the elusive butterfly through dense forest, and a misstep causes them to tumble into a cavern where Osborne is badly injured. While Pete battles fear and disorientation, Osborne is rescued by locals, and the pair begin the slow road toward a hospital.

Back in the village, a kind, unnamed villager reveals that she has indeed caught the butterfly and hands it over, a moment that shifts the weight of the journey. Pete faces a pivotal choice: he considers preserving the specimen for a personal collection, but ultimately decides to release the butterfly so it can continue to thrive and multiply, a symbolic gesture of hope and renewal rather than possession.
