Augustus Pinkerton II, Henry Fonda, a steady busboy with a quiet dream for something better, becomes entangled in a life far beyond his modest world. He forms a bond with Gloria Lyons, a pretty yet cool-hearted nightclub singer, played by Lucille Ball. When a jealous boyfriend, Case Ables, [Barton MacLane], knocks her down a flight of stairs, Gloria is left crippled and penniless as the expenses of a long convalescence mount. In a moment of quiet generosity, Pinks invites her to stay with him in his small apartment, offering shelter, protection, and a fragile sense of home.

When Pinks’ friend Violette Shumberg marries Nicely Nicely Johnson and the couple moves to Florida, Gloria orders Pinks to take her there to recuperate, and he wheels her toward a new chapter in Miami. There, Gloria becomes entangled in a new social milieu, while the two of them navigate a delicate balance between care and dependence. Violette Shumberg, [Agnes Moorehead], and Nicely Nicely Johnson, [Eugene Pallette], are part of the shifting circle that surrounds them, each bringing their own ambitions and tensions into the mix.

In Florida, Gloria reencounters an old lover, Decatur Reed, who loses interest once he discovers she is an invalid. The revelation hits hard and tests the bond between Gloria and Pinks, who ends up leaving her for a time to seek work as a busboy in a club owned by Case, only to return when Violette tells him Gloria’s health is fragile again.

Despair weighs on Gloria, who confesses a longing for one last night in a gown bedecked with jewels. Her wish sets off a chain of bold actions. Pinks spots Mimi Venus, the glamorous showgirl, wearing such a gown, and he breaks into Mimi’s home, where he overhears her being blackmailed by one of Case’s thugs, who threatens to publicize her infidelity unless she surrenders her jewelry. Mimi Venus, [Marion Martin], becomes the focal point of his risk-filled plan.

Pinks disguises himself and retrieves the gems from the thief, then makes a bold demand: he will keep quiet about the crime if Case Ables agrees to host a party at his club with Gloria as the guest of honor. The stakes rise as the night of the party approaches and the tension between old loyalties and new desires intensifies.

Yet the celebration is derailed when the police arrest Pinks, whose Social Security card is found in Mimi’s closet. When Mimi’s husband learns why the busboy ended up in their home, he experiences a moment of pity and decides to drop the charges, reshaping the path ahead for everyone involved.

In the end, Gloria recognizes the sacrifices Pinks has made. He lifts her in his arms so they can dance, a small, hopeful moment that acknowledges their connection. Gloria tells Pinks she longs to see the ocean, a final wish he vows to fulfill. Tragically, Gloria dies before they reach it, but undaunted, Pinks carries her up the stairs to honor her final request, keeping faith with the love that sustained them through the darkest days.
