What Is The Baron of the Locks About?

After winning a boat in a card game, the fortunate Baron sets off with his former lover in search of fresh adventures. Misfortune lands them in a sleepy village, where his seasoned sailing companion quits for the promise of attractive scenery offered by a wealthy local. Jérôme, a baron by birth and a former fighter ace, lives now as a gambler who flits between casinos and racetracks. In Deauville, he hits a remarkable run: he wins a million from a Middle Eastern billionaire at baccarat and, in the same breath, seizes his mistress, Perle Germain-Joubert, for himself. In a private game, he goes even further, beating a nobleman who is trying to sell his motor yacht and walking away with eleven million. The yacht, valued at nine million, becomes his prize, with a promise that the remaining two million will be mailed to a post office he designates. The vessel sits at Rotterdam, so Jérôme—accompanied by Perle Germain-Joubert—heads there and then charts a course by inland waterways toward Monte Carlo, already plotting his next score.
