The Bakery Girl of Monceau 1963

A law student in Paris’s Monceau neighborhood, Barbet Schroeder, grows smitten with Sylvie, a young woman he keeps noticing around the 8th arrondissement, but he can’t bring himself to talk to her. With a bit of help from his friend, Schmidt, he engineers a literal bump‑in to break the ice. The plan works and Sylvie’s presence seems within reach, yet soon after, he loses sight of her again.

To fill the void, the man begins skipping dinner and instead spends his evenings wandering the streets, hoping to cross paths with Sylvie. Along the way he forms a budding rapport with Jacqueline, the warm‑hearted bakery worker who catches his eye. After several weeks, he convinces Jacqueline to go on a date, though he tells himself that she was the pursuer.

On the night he is to pick up Jacqueline, fate intervenes: he runs into Sylvie, who has been convalescing at home with a badly sprained ankle, and he immediately abandons his plan with Jacqueline in favor of Sylvie. The couple marries six months later and settles into Sylvie’s apartment near the bakery. By this point, Jacqueline has moved on to another job, and the man never learns whether she saw him drop one relationship for another.
