In a dystopian future set in 2050, fighter pilot Adam Reed embarks on a daring rescue mission by hijacking a time jet to reach the year 2018. However, an unforeseen accident lands him in 2022, where he encounters his 12-year-old self Adam12. The young Adam is grappling with the emotional fallout from the recent loss of their father, Louis Reed, a brilliant quantum physicist whose tragic death in a car accident has left a void in their lives.

In 2022, Adam’s mother, Ellie Reed, is trying to cope with the family’s grief. Young Adam struggles with bullying at school, resulting in his suspension after he stands up to the tormentors. During this tumultuous time, the adult Adam confides in his younger self about their shared grief and the mistakes he regrets from their past, particularly regarding how he treated Ellie.

Meanwhile, the older Adam’s jet, identified with technology attuned to his DNA, remains inoperable due to his injuries. Hesitantly, he involves his younger self in a plan to repair the aircraft. Their journey leads them to a drugstore for supplies, where Adam encourages Adam12 to confront the bullies, but the young boy again finds himself at a disadvantage. Eventually, Adam takes matters into his own hands, asserting his dominance over the bully and defending his younger counterpart.

In one poignant scene, the adult Adam meets Ellie at a bar and encourages her to embrace vulnerability, suggesting that revealing her own pain regarding Louis’s death could strengthen her bond with young Adam. As the stakes rise, Adam reveals he’s in search of his wife, Laura, who vanished during a time travel mission to 2018, supposedly perishing in a plane crash. Unbeknownst to him, Maya Sorian, portrayed by [Catherine Keener], the dystopian leader of his future world, is relentlessly pursuing him alongside her lieutenant, Christos.

Unexpectedly, Laura materializes during a confrontation, revealing she has been missing in the past for four years, having narrowly escaped an assassination attempt by Sorian herself. Laura’s revelations—that Sorian altered historical events for her advantage—prompt Adam to consider a drastic solution: to time travel back to 2018 and obliterate the technology that grants control over time.

But this plan terrifies him; he fears altering the timeline might prevent him from ever reuniting with Laura. As Sorian attacks, Laura sacrifices herself, allowing the two Adams to jump back to 2018 with only one time jump left.

Upon their arrival in 2018, the duo approaches Louis for assistance with their perilous mission, but he initially refuses, fearing the risks to the time-stream. Adam counters that Sorian has already compromised the fabric of time and that their family’s future is on the line. In a twist, the future Maya confronts her younger self, revealing her intentions to thwart Adam’s mission, leading to an imminent confrontation.

In this last stand, Adam12 grapples with his unresolved grief over their father’s death, a revelation that fuels his determination in their battle. As chaos erupts amid their confrontation with Sorian and her forces, the particle accelerator malfunctions due to the clashing energies of the future and present timelines. In a tragic turn, Maya’s attack results in her own younger self’s demise, severing the chain of her threat.

With the time-travel technology dismantled and the future regained, Louis opts to remain oblivious to his fate, cherishing moments with both versions of his son. In 2022, Adam12 reconciles with Ellie, letting go of his pent-up resentment, and ultimately, the adult Adam encounters Laura years later under fateful circumstances reminiscent of their initial meeting, ready to embrace a future filled with hope.
