His second-in-command, simply called the Captain Boyd ‘Red’ Morgan, governs alongside him, and together they maintain a fragile balance. The two are the only inhabitants who can speak or hear; everyone else, including the Supreme’s granddaughter Trirene Darlene Tompkins, is rendered deaf-mute, and fertility among the citizens is almost non-existent. Trirene’s telepathic abilities allow her to read Allison’s thoughts, and she quickly senses that he is not a threat or a spy—an impression that earns him a wary, guarded welcome from the Supreme and the Captain, even as the Captain suspects his motives.

Yet danger lurks inside the Citadel walls. In a final, poignant gesture, he passes along Trirene’s ring—an emblem of the fragile thread connecting hope across time—and urges the watchers to consider the possibilities that lie ahead.
