Hana Doda, a young woman living in the rugged mountains of Albania, fights to escape a future defined by arranged roles for women—marriage, obedience, and servitude. In a bold act of defiance, and guided by her uncle, she reaches for a longstanding tradition preserved in the old law Kanun, which offers a radical path: by taking an oath of eternal virginity, she can become a Mark, a sworn virgin who may bear arms, live freely, and move through life as a man.
Yet freedom wears a heavy cloak. The new identity begins to feel like a prison, and the vast mountains that framed Hana’s childhood threaten to close in around her. The choice that promised liberation starts to fracture her sense of self, leaving her with a tug-of-war between the woman she was and the man she has become.
Driven by a need that cannot be ignored, Mark embarks on a journey that stretches beyond borders and expectations. She leaves behind her homeland and steps into Italy, entering a space where two distant and contrasting worlds collide: Albania and Italy, past and present, masculine and feminine. The voyage is not only geographic but existential, as she navigates the unfamiliar currents of a society that views her altered body and new identity with curiosity, caution, and sometimes welcome warmth.
In this slow, intimate exploration, she begins to feel her body anew—the physical sensations of touch, closeness, and vulnerability that had been suppressed by years of constraint. She encounters people who offer care, trust, and affection—connections that life had previously denied her—and she starts to see the possibility of a different kind of love. These experiences illuminate a path toward healing, showing that tenderness and humanity can exist where rigid expectations once prevailed.
What unfolds is a reconciliation of two halves. Mark gradually reclaims the person Hana always was, and Hana integrates the strength, courage, and sense of self she discovered across the border. The story renders a quiet rebirth: a person who is both true to her origins and free to define a future on her own terms. In the end, she emerges as a whole, liberated, and fully realized being—the result of a journey that traversed culture, gendered rules, and the intimate landscapes of the heart.
