The young nurse Siv Essy Persson chafes at the strict confines her religious parents impose and at a dull, unfulfilling engagement to Sven Preben Kørning. In the hospital where she works, a married antiques dealer named Heinz Gersen Preben Mahrt flirts with Siv, awakening a side of her she’s never fully acknowledged. Despite warnings that Gersen is a philandering playboy, Siv allows his attention to pull her into an affair, drawn by a new sense of sexual liberty she hadn’t known she could claim. Gersen professes love and even suggests leaving his wife for Siv, a proposition Siv confronts with a mix of doubt and longing.
